As part of RCommunity, causes may be attached to events for classification and to make such events easier to search.  Within RCommunity, Rutgers has added additional causes and believe it is important to provide a definition for these terms.

 

Addressing Conflict – real world or simulated activities that bring people together to negotiate conflicts and help them learn and hone dispute resolution skills

Addressing Differences – opportunities for people to productively discuss issues of ideology, race, gender, religion, and other differences

Analytical Skills – ability to consider problems and weigh potential solutions

Bridge-Building – programs and practices designed to build relationships between people of different backgrounds and beliefs

Cultural Competency Practices – workshops, trainings, exercises that help people understand differences, biases, and debates around equity and opportunity

Donating to Politics – making financial contributions to candidates, parties, or political causes

Ethical Reasoning – capacity to reach individual, well thought out conclusions about issues where judgements are needed

Facilitation Skills – ability to support discussions and deliberations among other people

Fact-Finding – ability to find reliable sources, identify information, or misinformation and sort face from fiction

Holding Office (Student Government, Commissions, Committees) – leadership opportunities including student government, clubs and other student organizations, commissions or councils that address or engage peers

Listening – willingness to listen to differing perspectives, even on controversial issues, and appreciate that a range of solutions might exist

Media Literacy – capacity to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and participate with messages in a variety of forms (print to digital to virtual)

Personal Responsibility – belief that you are part of a social contract and have both rights and obligations in a diverse society

Speaking Up – expressing one’s opinion about a civic or political cause (by doing such things as making presentations, writing letters to the editor, posting on social media)

Values-Based Decision Making – community and civic society programs that help people build character and self-awareness
